Gayà sees Spain call-up as reward for VCF work

The fullback credits his performances at club level for his role for his country

José Luis Gayà is a regular presence in the Spain national team, and has been called up again for their latest series of fixtures. ‘La Roja’ play two games in the UEFA Nations League in the coming days, against Germany and Ukraine.

Ahead of the fixtures, the fullback spoke to Sefutbol, revealing how he believes his showings in LaLiga have convinced the national team of his abilities.

“We were really looking forward to getting back together with the Spain squad, as it’s been a while since we last did so and we are very excited. We have some big challenges ahead and are looking forward to getting started.”

“Being called up for Spain is always a reward for everything that I have done at Valencia CF, and I’m proud of that,” he explained.

Gayà made his debut in 2018, against Croatia at the Martínez Valero in Elche. Since then, he has only missed out on one squad, due to a muscle injury that ruled him out of games against Norway and Sweden in October 2019. An established part of the setup under Robert Moreno, he continues to be involved now that Luis Enrique has returned as coach.

The 25-year-old faces stiff competition from former Valencia CF leftbacks Jordi Alba and Juan Bernat, plus Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguilón. However, strong performances for both club and country mean he is a prime candidate to feature in next summer’s European Championships.
